Lumière et Son was a year long project by Sam Renseiw and Philip Sanderson in which Sam provided the Lumières (silent footage of usually no more than one minute in duration in the manner of the Lumière brothers one reel films) and Philip added the Son or sound mix using found recordings, snippets from film soundtracks etc. The project ran from November 2009 to November 2010. The posts are presented in the chronological order in which they were made - so oldest first.
sqaure? dance indeed.
ReplyDeletemorphology of body, sustainability and space & the girl chewing gum on the far left corner near the antique (reconstructed) city wall
( actually the whole view is a complete reconstruction from 1947-53, including a complete remodeling of the cathedral's facade)
while recording i did not notice the regular pace(s). a great reminder !
Yes I was trying to do something with the choreography of the actors on the (recreated) set and a line dancing instruction video I had seen came to mind - and interestingly the timing of the count was almost perfectly in sync with the first man's walking pace and after that they all seem to be just a little in step. Put me in mind of John Smith's The Girl Chewing Gum http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=yaJKdVpGGx8&feature=related
ReplyDeleteyes, girl chewing gum is a small masterpiece.

As you say a small masterpiece
ReplyDeleteThe counting works wonderfully. The viewer understands the motivation of the marching characters, even if the motivation, supplied by the soundtrack, is entirely incidental, accidental and a true oblique strategy.
ReplyDeleteYes there is a lot of serendipity in many of the sound/image interactions here. I have an idea or two for this or that sound and mess around and then something clicks and starts to reveal the secret choreography of the Lumieres
